Recently, I've been thinking about last years' defense while watching 2019 games in real time. I came to the realization that I saw more pre-snap confused defensive players (waving frantically at the sidelines, trying to signal teammates on the field, etc.) on plays in a single game in 2018 than I've seen in all of 2019. Is this due to simplified defensive schemes? Or perhaps a combination of that and overall better instruction/reps?
