Hey gang, been covered up like a long tailed cat in a room full o' rockin' chairs, but I wanted to chime in about what I see with Sooners commit NRK.
First he's 6'7" 240. He's got length that won't quit. Physically he looks like a young Julius Peppers or Calais Campbell. He hasn't played football very long, and that's evident in his film. Early in the season he almost looked awkward getting in a stance, but as it got later in the year, you could see him get more comfortable and cut it loose.
At this point he'll need more snaps and just play football more. Once he focuses completely on football, it wouldn't shock me to see him up around 275 or 280.
He'll need to work on his hand usage & technique along with his pad level. Obviously for a 6'7" guy, pad level will be an issue if you don't focus on it. Using the length he has to keep offensive linemen's hands off of him will be paramount to his success.
It looks like the Grinch defense is perfect for him to be a part of. Giving him a gap to attack and turning it loose is what he needs. He doesn't need to be thinking a lot, just forcing the issue.
He's tailor made for the loops, twists and stunts that Grinch likes to run. Being a basketball player, he's used to working through traffic and picks to stay on his man. He understands how to avoid contact and get to who he's supposed to be after, in this case, the qb.
He's takeoff isn't great at this point, as I said he's getting used to being in a stance, but his change of direction and fluidity are as smooth as silk. He's a very natural athlete, who just needs more time to develop and grow as a player.
Cain's ability to teach and develop this guy will be front and center.
